Camping is an ancient and time-honored pastime and tradition, but that doesn’t mean you can’t shake it up a little with some modern technology. ATV camping is a great way to make carrying gear easier and go on adventures in the nearby wilderness, but what do you bring to make the most of the limited carrying capacity? We here at RideNow SoCal know it can be hard to fit all your typical supplies on your ATV, so we’ve put together a list of things you’ll want to make the most of your experience. For more information, or to see the ATVs we have for sale, contact our store in Vista, California, today!

Storage Upgrades

Your ATV has pretty limited storage space, but there are a number of upgrades that can help, like luggage racks, totes, and trunks. Still, we recommend packing fairly light. Every accessories and bag of supplies adds weight that will slow you down and impact your fuel efficiency. Scale down your camping supplies as much as you can without sacrificing the essentials, and get what you do need in travel-sized packages when possible.

Shelter

It can be difficult to bring a full tent and your usual sleeping bag on an ATV camping trip. Those bulky items may mean leaving behind other supplies you’ll want. When possible, renting a cabin at your destination is a good way to ensure you stay snug, but if you’re unable or unwilling, consider a small, one-person backpacking tent. There are also lightweight sleeping bags and pads designed for backpacking that can help you stay comfortable.

Clothing

Obviously you want clothes that are comfortable, and you definitely want some clean ones to change into, but you may not need as many spares as you think. Pants, for instance, can be worn a number of times before they’re too dirty and need washing. If there’s a nearby laundromat, you can pack even lighter! Keep in mind that moisture-wicking synthetic fabrics will stay clean and comfy longer.

Food

Riding your ATV is a workout, and camping in general can really take it out of you. With that in mind, nutrition will be even more important when you combine the two. Going out to eat can be difficult and expensive, so maximize your food supplies by adding calorie- and protein-dense foods like peanut butter, trail mix, protein bars, granola, etc. For dishes and utensils, backpacking supplies will be helpful guides again.

Miscellaneous

Finally, remember to bring other necessities like basic toiletries, a first aid kit, a mini tool kit, and whatever chargers your devices require. Keep these all together in one or two bags to keep track of more valuable items.
